Support Groups.

The Grief Support Group aims to:
– Support the experience of loss and grief.
– Foster the sharing of experiences and support between people in the process of bereavement.
– Promoting learning about the experience of pain/bereavement experienced by the group: we will have sessions dedicated to psychoeducation and empowerment/development of group resources and some topics of interest related to the experience of mourning and loss will be addressed.

The grieving process

The stages of grief are essential components of the process of accepting losses. It is somewhat peculiar that we, as human beings, are aware of the finitude of our existence, but it is not customary to be ready for it.
Losses often hit people hard, causing tears, regrets, despair and depression. These are normal, expected, and necessary reactions to alleviate the grief caused by the death of a loved one. However, would they be milder if there was an understanding and acceptance of the imminence of death?
The truth is that few are prepared to deal with losses.
The grieving process is still a taboo. Most prefer to leave it to worry about it at the exact moment of the event. Because of the many superstitions that circulate in Brazil, some people are even afraid to “call death” simply by touching this subject!

Say goodbye to the person you love.

When a loved one is terminally ill, it is often inevitable to talk about death. However, not all people are ready to have this conversation. Some people, however, find it comforting to have a dialogue about the subject.

By offering your presence, you can convey a sense of comfort to your family member during difficult times. In addition, it is essential to provide a safe space for them to share stories and memories, as well as providing distractions to help them shake off their worries. For some people, the opportunity to talk about their fears and share the complexities of their feelings can be an excellent way of coping.

Sometimes we are so busy with our day-to-day routine that we forget to say important things to our friends and family. However, when someone close is dying, sharing true feelings in an urgent way is crucial.

What is Mourning?

We call "bereavement" a specific emotional state, which begins with the threat or rupture of a love bond and is characterized as a period of pain and loss.

Consequences of COVID-19.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, death is an issue on the agenda: in the daily news about deaths recorded (both in Portugal and in other countries), in the statistics and information available and, above all, in our minds.

It is expected that people do anticipatory mourning, anticipating the death of loved ones. That, in situations of severe respiratory illness in patients who have contracted coronavirus at an advanced age, and/or in the context of other potentially aggravating clinical conditions, health professionals, family members and friends anticipate the death of someone seriously ill. Anticipating the loss of a family member can be as painful as the actual loss, although, on the other hand, it allows preparation for the inevitable parting. It can be a time to resolve problems and concerns or seek support from people of reference (spiritual leaders, health professionals, family and friends).
